charlie hebdo depicted the kidnapped girls of boko haram as pregnant “welfare queens” people would rather grieve for racists than black lives

I’ve seen so many posts about Charlie Hebdo’s covers taken out of context, and the Boko Haram kidnapped girls is one of them, I know this won’t change anybody’s mind about the newspaper being "racist” but I feel forced to make things clear.

You’re talking about Charlie Hebdo as if it was a radical racist newspaper when it is actually far left wing, many of its members even fought for equality.

This cover depicts the kidnapped girls as “wellfare queens” for a reason that you’re (obviously) unaware about. The newspaper came out when the Boko Haram tragedy started but also when the French government decided to decrease the wellfare allocations. What Charlie Hebdo is mocking right there is the part of the French population that thinks black people are lazy worthless trash that feed off their taxes. “If you’re so dumb and racist you must think that those poor kidnapped girls are no better than the black French women you hate so much.” is what they’re saying.

But then again you don’t know anything about French satire, which is a big part of our History especially since the Revolution. Of course, taken out of context (and sometimes even with their contexts) those pictures are shocking, but that’s what they’re meant to be. I don’t always agree with the way Charlie Hebdo brings things to light but as a French person I know it’s NOT meant to be racist, it’s actually the opposite.

I come from a far left wing family and when I see non French people (often from Northern America) speak without knowing it makes me sick. The journalist and artists from Charlie Hebdo who died don’t deserve your undocumented comments.

THEN AGAIN I agree with the fact that even with the tragedy happening in France we shouldn’t forget about the other issues of the world, but hey that’s how the media works. The Western world is once again “threatened by radical Islam”, you’d expect the news to jump on that. I personaly can’t think about what’s happening in other countries because this happened just next door to where I live and I know it’s just the beginning of something worse. Try to take our place for a moment.
